About the position
We are looking for two motivated summer students to join our Integrated Control Systems division (ICS), part of the Operations and Machine Directorate, over the summer. Your task is to migrate the existing ROS1-based driver to ROS2 for one of our industrial robots. A major part of the work involves thorough testing and validation of the robot following the upgrade, ensuring safe and correct operation. You will also write clear documentation covering the new interface. If time permits, you will develop an EPICS interface to the robot, connecting it to ESS's broader control system infrastructure.

About you
You are a university student in robotics, computer science, mechatronics, or a related field. You have hands-on experience with ROS (experience with ROS1 migration is a plus) and are comfortable programming in C and Python. Linux skills and familiarity with industrial robot systems is valuable, and any prior exposure to EPICS control systems is a bonus.

We value candidates who demonstrate strong planning and organising abilities. You are someone who takes pride in following instructions and procedures carefully. You also bring a natural aptitude for translating your theoretical knowledge into practical, working solutions on real hardware.

Duration and location
You will work on-site at ESS in Lund during the summer 2026, for approx. 8–12 weeks.
Start date per agreement.
