Mer information
You will join CERN's Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings (TE-VSC-SCC) section, which is in charge of surface analysis and surface modifications through plasma treatment and thin film coating and will define the type of treatment to be selected.
The treatment recipe for a specific section of LHC will be defined in small scale laboratory experiments before building the infrastructure to perform the process "in situ" in the machine in 2026.
As a Material Engineer, your responsabilities will include:
- Contribute to the selection of this method by performing surface analysis (X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy) on treated samples at room and cryogenic temperatures;
- Monitor the surface composition of the resulting copper surface and its secondary electron yield;
- Provide feedback to a small team of physicists and engineers, in order to optimize the process;
Skills and/or knowledge
- MSc or PhD in Physics or Material Science;
- Experience working in a surface analysis system;
- Experience in vacuum based surface modification;
- Experience in ultra-high vacuum technology;
You have a professional background in Physics or Material Science (or a related field) and have either:
- a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
- or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience;
