DESY expands its research on novel laser-plasma accelerators (LPAs) for future applications in health, photon science, and particle physics. At the core of these activities is the development of plasma-based injector for the synchrotron light source PETRA IV. In this context, we are searching for a highly-motivated scientist to develop new plasma targets (including targets supporting high average power), tailored target chambers and their support systems, and integrate said plasma targets and chambers in the plasma accelerator beamline.

With the PETRA IV project, DESY is launching one of the most ambitious and innovative large-scale research projects worldwide. PETRA IV, the most brilliant synchrotron radiation source of the next generation, will be the ultimate 4D X-ray microscope, setting new standards in precision and performance. About your role:

  • Contribute to the development of the PETRA IV plasma injector
  • Develop and operate novel plasma targets for LPAs, also with a focus on high average power operation
  • Develop, implement and operate corresponding chambers
  • Integrate target chambers into the LPA beamline, and adopt them to the requirements of laser and electron beam transport
  • Develop concepts to efficiently and actively cool LPA targets, with a focus on long-term stable operation
  • In this context, perform complex multi-physics simulations, including heat transport, computational fluid dynamics and molecular flow
